With extreme top speed capability already checked off, Bugatti has decided to deliver a more agile and track-capable Chiron for the enthusiast. The new 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is 110 pounds lighter than the standard Chiron. It also gets a retuned suspension that includes 65% stiffer springs at the front and 33% stiffer springs at the rear. Firmer dampers and 2.5 degrees of negative wheel camber have also been added to the mix. A redesigned transmission reduced its gear ratios by 15% across all seven speeds, giving the Pur Sport lighting-quick acceleration when exiting corners.
The Pur Sport gets more downforce through a new adjustable rear wing that replaces the old fixed spoiler. In addition, removing the hydraulic actuation system from the previous setup saved a total of 22 pounds. Additional downforce is also provided through the redesigned front bumper. To maximize the chassis improvements, Bugatti and Michelin developed the Sport Cup 2R. The new tire, which was specifically designed for the Pur Sport, generates 10% more lateral acceleration. New magnesium wheels that weigh 35 pounds less than the standard set complement the stickier set of rubber. Optional carbon aero blades that draw air out of the wheel area then alongside the car to improve aerodynamics can be outfitted on the wheels.
The new Chiron variant uses the same massive 8.0-liter quad-turbo W-16 powerplant as the other models, but its redline has been increased to 6,900 rpm–a 200 rpm increase over the standard engine. Although output is unchanged at an impressive 1,500 horsepower at 6,900 rpm and 1180 lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm, the shorter gear ratios have given the Pur Sport an acceleration advantage over the standard car. The run to 62 mph takes just 2.3 seconds and 124 mph is achieved in an incredible 5.5 seconds. Sixth-gear acceleration from 37 mph to 75 mph is done in 4.4 seconds, which is 3 seconds quicker than the standard Chiron’s 7.4 seconds.
The enhancement in acceleration and handling from shorter gear ratios and greater downforce does come at a cost, as the Pur Sport’s top speed is reached at 217 mph. That is 44 mph less than the standard car’s 261 mph top speed and 87 mph short of the 304 mph that the Chiron Super Sport 300+ is able to achieve. However, that type of compromise is expected when refocusing an extreme high-speed hypercar toward handling and acceleration. For a more personalized driving style and to capture the essence of the car’s capability, the ESC driving assistance system was updated to include a new ESC Sport+. The new driving mode delays the stability control’s intervention and allows you to enjoy the car near its limits.
Only 60 examples of the Pur Sport will be built and they will be priced at $3,600,000.
